Local government leaders must connect the council financial crisis to lived experience

The Government's partial write-off of SEND deficits is welcome, but it does not fix underlying pressures, says Ben Page.

Last week, the chancellor told us from the despatch box the plan is working. Inflation falling. Economy growing. Borrowing down.

But, buried in the Office for Budget Responsibility's Spring Statement forecast was a sentence that should concentrate minds: net current spending by local government is expected to decline in the coming years. This is the watchdog's way of saying the sector is heading toward a wall and the handbrake is not yet applied.
