Odin did not stumble accidentally into wisdom. He paid for it in blood.According to Viking mythology Odin travelled to Mimir's well, source of wisdom hidden deep beneath the roots of the world. But wisdom carried a price. Mimir demanded one of Odin's eyes.Not symbolically. Literally.Odin ripped out his own eye and dropped it into the black water beneath him. Blood pouring down his face. One side of the world suddenly dark forever. Agony in exchange for insight. Permanent loss in pursuit of understanding.The Vikings admired courage, strength and fearlessness in battle. But they also understood something modern organisations often prefer to avoid: wisdom is painful.You do not gain wisdom without sacrifice.The Viking image most people remember is the warrior with axe and shield charging into battle. Less attention is given to the importance the Vikings placed on judgment, knowledge and insight. Odin believed understanding was worth suffering for. He travelled the world searching for knowledge. He listened. He questioned. He sacrificed comfort in pursuit of wisdom.Modern leadership often seems to want the wisdom without the sacrifice.Most executives would prefer insight delivered in a PowerPoint summary before lunch.Modern organisations gather extraordinary amounts of information. Staff surveys. Consultation exercises. Engagement data. Exit interviews. Employee listening events. Yet staff across sectors consistently report not feeling heard.Many organisations now confuse collecting feedback with listening to it.This is particularly familiar in local government where consultation can sometimes feel less like listening and more like obtaining permission for decisions already made. Staff quickly recognise the difference between genuine listening and consultation exercises designed to reassure leadership everything is broadly on track.Leaders ask for feedback. Then dismiss criticism with phrases like:‘They are negative.'‘They do not understand the bigger picture.'‘They are resistant to change.'Wisdom is knowing what matters when conditions become difficult. Judgment is knowing what to do when there are no easy options left. Viking leaders crossing dangerous seas could not survive on optimism alone. Storms quickly exposed weak decision making.Occasionally this is true. But leaders rarely ask the more uncomfortable question: what if staff are seeing something leadership does not want to see?In some organisations uncomfortable truths become harder to hear the further up the hierarchy they travel.Modern organisations often mistake confidence for competence, visibility for leadership and decisiveness for wisdom.Knowledge is not the same as wisdom.Experience is not the same as judgment.Wisdom is knowing what matters when conditions become difficult. Judgment is knowing what to do when there are no easy options left. Viking leaders crossing dangerous seas could not survive on optimism alone. Storms quickly exposed weak decision making.The storm did not care about hierarchy.Offices are safer than longships. Human nature has changed far less.People still want leaders who listen, notice problems early and recognise the difference between reassuring information and uncomfortable reality.This becomes harder during periods of transformation, restructuring and financial pressure. New leaders arrive determined to modernise whilst quietly rediscovering lessons previous generations learned the hard way.The irony is that organisations now possess more information than at any point in history whilst often appearing less capable of honest reflection. Information is easy to gather. Wisdom is much harder because wisdom demands humility, discomfort and the willingness to hear things you would rather ignore.The Vikings understood this even if many modern organisations do not.That is why Odin sacrificed an eye rather than commission a consultant's report.
