The Mayoral Council meeting will today hear Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham call for an end to the out of area licensing of taxis.

Mayor Burnham is due to urge senior Government ministers to amend the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill to improve taxi licensing.

Arguing that the current taxi system is ‘broken', he will call for ‘urgent' reforms to ensure greater ‘local accountability' and licensing enforcement powers.

Mayor Burnham said the Bill provided an ‘opportunity for decisive action to be taken by the Government', adding: ‘Avoiding unnecessary delay and acting quickly to address out-of-area licensing will allow us to restore trust and raise standards through a system that is safe, fair and locally controlled.'
