The Trades Union Congress' long-serving deputy general secretary, Frances O'Grady, will become the first woman general secretary when she takes over from the organisation's respected leader, Brendan Barber, later this year.

Ms O'Grady is a highly-regarded figure and was first appointed to the TUC as a campaigns officer in 1994.
