New politics, new tensions

As Reform UK gathers this week for its annual conference, Rob Whiteman argues that with the party gaining control of some councils, local government must support new administrations while reinforcing robust legal, financial and ethical frameworks.

We appear to be heading for unprecedented electoral events. With four years before the next General Election, any result is possible. But on present polling, it is clearly going to be a challenge for the two main parties to emulate their share of last year's vote.

More votes for Reform, the Lib Dems, the Greens, et al, appear on the cards. This can produce disproportionate outcomes in our first-past-the-post system.
