Preventing abuse from happening must be our ultimate goal

As leaders of children’s services prepare to gather for their annual conference next week, Rachael Wardell says the full commitment of all public agencies, government departments and the wider public is needed to tackle abuse and exploitation.

Baroness Casey's recent report into group-based child sexual exploitation (CSE) makes for difficult reading and is a solemn reminder for us all about the absolutely essential work we do every day to keep our communities safe.

 Abuse of children is an appalling crime and needs to be rooted out from society. The report brings together the findings of an audit of more than 100 prosecutions, reviews, inquiries and initiatives going back over the last 15 years, with some serious case reviews dating back to the 1970s.
