How to reap the diversity dividend

Diversity policies must drop performative gestures and provide evidence of change to the lives of staff and residents if they are to be supported by local people, argues Simon Fanshawe.

As the May elections in the England will shatter votes into a five-way party split is there really any point in talking about diversity work in local councils?

Views are so polarised. Nigel Farage says ‘if you are a DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] officer, look for another job', while the Green Party commits itself to mentoring and supporting candidates from ‘under represented and LGBTQIA+ communities, including protections against queerphobia during campaigns'.
