Regions facing grant cut as fiscal overhaul takes shape

Regions will have their Whitehall grant cut if they want to grab a share of national taxation under chancellor Rachel Reeves’ fiscal devolution drive, it has emerged.

The Treasury’s Northern growth strategy, published last week, shed further light on the radical overhaul of funding, which will initially target places with the ‘potential to benefit’ and that are ‘ready and equipped to do so’.

It revealed that ‘where areas receive a share of tax revenues, Government will reduce grant funding accordingly’.
