SEND bailout at risk as councils await crucial guidance

Councils are facing a race against time to unlock essential central government funding for SEND (special educational needs and disabilities) deficits.

A pledge by ministers to pay off 90% of deficits – which amount to £5bn – is contingent on councils submitting ‘local SEND reform plans' to be signed off by the Department for Education.

However, crucial guidance and details of funding allocations have yet to be released by Whitehall, hindering efforts to meet a pressing deadline of 19 June.
