Local government chiefs have hit out at the inspection regime – and the Laming report – in the aftermath of the Baby P case. According to chief executives society SOLACE, the last Laming report ‘dodged' the question of whether enough money is put into safeguarding children. In a report issued this week, it also claimed inspection ‘has its limitations' and ‘invites self-delusions about competence'. It adds ‘inspection and inspectorates need to be more humble', and not claim to be ‘definitive about quality'. The report also claims: ‘We believe that political promises which exhort that "such deaths – or severe traumas – must never happen again" are irresponsible.'
