Councils have warned of dire consequences if their funding is reduced in the face of public sector cuts at next week's Spending Review.

A report by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) published yesterday said with defence spending likely to increase and health services historically enjoying generous funding increases, ‘some areas of spending will almost inevitably face real-terms cuts after this year'.
