Proposals to create a tough new regulatory body for adult social care services and health have been launched. Announced by health secretary, Alan Johnson, the care quality commission will have a key role in tackling healthcare-associated infections, and driving improvements in adult social care. It has also been tasked with driving the development of service choice for patients, particularly around direct payments. ‘The care quality commission will ensure all patients receive a safe and quality service, no matter what part of the system they are accessing, and at which point,' said Mr Johnson. The Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) welcomed the proposals, particularly the recognition that health and social services were ‘equal partners'. But president, Anne Williams, added: ‘There are still blank spaces to be filled in before we can be absolutely sure the new commission will best help meet the needs of adults who require care.' Ms Williams added the ADASS would give its full support in the coming discussions about the future care quality commission.
