Local elections 2021: The system creaked in the face of the number of polls

You know it’s been a bumper set of elections when it takes four days after the polls close to declare the final results.

The moniker ‘Super Thursday’ is not one many Returning Officers and electoral administrators are using. They have worked solidly long hours since December to organise the most complex combination of elections in a generation, mainly under lockdown and working from home.
