The clock is ticking on votes at 16

There’s a lot to like in the Representation of the People Bill, but the Association of Electoral Administrators is hesitant about some proposals, and the quicker the legislation is passed the better, says Peter Stanyon.

It has been a busy few weeks for elections news. Even before the announcement that 7 May polls for 30 councils in England due to be postponed were, in fact, back on, the whole UK electoral sector was poring over new draft legislation.

The Representation of the People Bill is due to become law ahead of the next UK Parliamentary General Election (UKPGE). With a ‘must be held by' date of August 2029, the clock is ticking.
