Big differences within urban Britain are a key reason why the UK economy is performing so poorly

The 19th edition of Centre for Cities’ flagship report, Cities Outlook 2026 will set out what Government can learn from successful cities and what must change for more cities to raise national prosperity, says Andrew Carter.

The Autumn Budget set out a familiar ambition: boost anaemic growth and raise stagnant living standards.

As 60% of the economy happens in cities, this emphasises their importance to achieving this ambition. Cities also suggest the policy programme that can deliver the Government's ambition.
