New faces, same challenges

Partnerships will be key to turning priorities into progress for new council administrations, writes Adele Gritten.

As newly elected members take their seats across England, there is a sense of energy and opportunity in the air. New ideas, fresh ambitions and a desire to deliver for residents will rightly shape the months ahead.

For those returning to office, this still marks the start of a new chapter. You may have a renewed focus, or there may be shifting priorities or changes in council leadership and direction.

But while the faces and ambitions may evolve, the challenges facing local government remain strikingly familiar. Financial pressures persist and the demand on services continues to grow. The need to deliver housing, infrastructure and better outcomes for communities has not diminished. If anything, the urgency has increased.

At Local Partnerships, we work alongside councils as a trusted public sector delivery partner. We are part of the public sector family, owned by the Local Government Association, HM Treasury and Welsh Government. Our team works with councils on the ground to provide additional capacity and capability; from housing delivery and regeneration projects, to contract management, governance and supporting councils through local government reorganisation or large scale transformation programmes.

For new administrations, the biggest challenge is turning priorities into progress at pace, in a constrained environment. That requires the right expertise, capacity and delivery structures from the outset.

Local government does not stand still after an election, and neither do the needs of residents. The most effective councils are those that can quickly translate emerging priorities into action and that often depends on the strength of the partnerships around them.
