Croydon elects Conservative mayor

Croydon LBC has voted in a Conservative mayor, bucking the trend for a shift to the left in the Capital.

Croydon LBC has voted in a Conservative mayor, bucking the trend for a shift to the left in the Capital.

The borough introduced a mayor for the first time following a referendum last year – and as voters in the existing mayoralty in Bristol voted to get rid of their directly elected mayor.

There remains a question over the political make-up of the council new mayor Jason Perry will be presiding over as Croydon is the only council yet to declare its count results.

Mayor Perry won by just 600 votes over Labour's Val Shawcross.

Croydon has faced two public interest reports and a section 114 notice since voters last went to the polls.
