Time to empower the places that matter

Labour's Neighbourhood Commission is not just good politics, but good policy says Ravi Gurumurthy.

There is growing interest within Labour on place making. In the parts of the country where Reform are making inroads, Labour wants to build people's sense of pride, belonging and control.

A new Neighbourhood Commission, headed by Hilary Armstrong – the minister who took charge of neighbourhood renewal in the last Labour government – may provide some clues. Just as George Osborne institutionalised a commitment to cities through mayors and combined authorities, Labour may look to strengthen hyper-local devolution.
