Looking for the evidence

Local government should look to inject scientific rigour into new innovations, says Ravi Gurumurthy.

There is a simple principle that should be applied to every aspect of public spending. Every state-funded programme should either be evidence-based or evidence-generating.

In healthcare, this would be uncontroversial. We expect NHS drug treatments to have undergone trials, alongside investment in R&D. But elsewhere, we take a different approach.
