We should be encouraging new councillors rather than sneering at their mistakes

As many have recently commented, the two-party system in the UK is no longer factually correct. 

As a UK-wide organisation, the Association for Public Service Excellence has long recognised that this is nothing new. Differences in power and voter share in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland – where a plethora of parties and voting systems are already a feature of local government administrations – means that we regularly witness seismic shifts between parties, minority administrations and rainbow coalitions.
