Financial reform is crucial, but councils also need a funded transition

Councils need lasting SEND deficit funding and a credible path to reform, says Nina Philippidis.

The Government's commitment to addressing historic special educational needs and disabilities deficits is welcome, but it must not become a one-off that leaves councils carrying the next wave of debt.

For many authorities, the sums are significant. Gloucestershire's Dedicated Schools Grant deficit stood at £126m in March. Even if the Government funds 90%, the remaining 10% will be a major challenge.
