Local government needs genuine devo

The Local Government Association 'supports devolution where governance is local by default, with built-in subsidiarity and accountability', says Louise Gittins.

The English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill has been published, signalling a significant shift of powers from Whitehall in one of the biggest reorganisations of local government in 50 years. 

Councils are critical to realising the ambitions in this Bill and must be empowered to work side by side with mayors and public services to deliver for communities. To enable this, local government needs genuine devolution – local, democratic and sustainably funded.
