Party conference season is well under way. National politicians are competing to give practical meaning to abstract nouns like ‘change', ‘renewal' and ‘opportunity'. They could do worse than to learn from the metro mayors also in attendance at this year's conferences.

While Westminster wrestles with being relevant to the ‘normal' person, metro mayors across the country are demonstrating how their policies can improve places in ways that people notice and welcome.
