LGA CONFERENCE

Proud to serve the sector

Writing in LGA Conference week, newly re-elected chair Cllr Louise Gittins reflects on the Government’s key announcements and says council leaders must have a defined and meaningful role in future governance structures.

I would normally be reflecting on the year following the last Local Government Association Annual Conference (LGA). But of course, it's only been nine months since we met in Harrogate, for a later than usual conference – moved because of the General Election in July. Yet despite not being a full year, a lot has happened.

On a personal note, it's now been a year since I became chair of the LGA (where has the time gone?) and I was delighted to be re-elected this week. As I said in my opening speech to conference, I am inspired and incredibly proud of everything our sector does to improve the lives of our residents. One thing I have learnt as chair, is how this vital work goes unnoticed, and deserves far greater recognition.
