After the reshuffle: ensuring the LGA's voice continues to be heard

The LGA is engaging with the new ministerial team and with parliament to help shape reforms around devolution and to offer perspectives on behalf of councils, says Cllr Louise Gittins.

This remains a pivotal time for our sector as new ministers in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government take up their roles. We have moved quickly to warmly welcome secretary of state, Steve Reed, and ministers of state Alison McGovern and Miatta Fahnbulleh, while continuing to write to more ministers as their portfolios are confirmed, with an offer to discuss our shared priorities as we ensure the voice of local government is heard clearly and consistently.

We work with the department to help shape reforms around devolution and reorganisation. Local Government Association (LGA) senior vice chairman and Conservative group leader Kevin Bentley and LGA vice chair and Labour group leader Bev Craig last week gave evidence to MPs scrutinising the English Devolution and Community Empowerment Bill currently before Parliament, to offer perspectives on behalf of councils.
