Public prioritisation of social care as a major issue has dropped to a record of between 1% and 3% from a 2017 peak of 18%, analysis has found.

The King's Fund charity said public understanding of social care was low, with a third thinking it is free or provided by the NHS.

It recommended more effort was put into cross-party dialogue after only one reported cross-party meeting hosted by the ongoing Casey Commission on reform.

The commission is due to present its initial findings this year, with its final report being published in 2028.

Head of social care at trade union Unison, Gavin Edwards, called on the Government to speed up the reform timetable.
