Controlling immigration will not address the labour market issues

The recognition of the need for deep changes in the structure and systems of delivering social care must now be part of the solution, says Mo Baines.

The Restoring Control over the Immigration System White Paper was met with widespread concern within local government, with the standout announcement on social care work visas.

A deep dive into the paper reveals some startling figures. The health and care visa route, expanded in 2022, led to a sharp increase in the numbers of workers from 37,000 to 108,000 by 2023. However, existing changes to the system according to Health Foundation data, suggests around 90% fewer care workers, home carers and senior care workers were granted visas in 2024.
