Developing new towns maximises opportunities for recycling

With so many innovations in waste and recycling things can be done differently 'if we learn from others and stop repeating old mistakes', says Mo Baines.

It is not exactly a secret to anyone who knows me. My family nickname is the ‘womble' because I can never just walk past a piece of litter. I despise the fact that people think it is acceptable to throw rubbish on pavements, or worse still, coffee cups and plastic bottles from car windows at motorway junctions.

On a recent visit to Palma, Majorca, I was struck by the overall cleanliness of the main route along the marina. Aside from well-designed cycle lanes which separated cyclists from the highway and pedestrian footways, every few metres underground bins have been installed with clearly labelled recycling opportunities. Within the historic city centre, mobile platforms with recycling facilities are brought in and out at peak hours, preserving the aesthetics while removing any opportunity to avoid recycling on the go.
