The Local Government Association conference in Liverpool came at a time of significant challenge and change for the sector.

For many, it offered a much-needed opportunity to step back, reflect and connect with others facing similar pressures. One of my highlights wasn't on the main stage, but at Drinks with a Difference, the evening Tile Hill hosted with our partners from the Different programme.

Different is a leadership development programme for senior people from the global majority working in local government, aimed at helping them step into executive roles and build leadership that better reflects the communities councils serve.

The room was full and buzzing. Senior officers and members from across the sector came to listen, connect and show their support. It felt like a moment of shared belief that leadership in local government can, and should, better reflect the people and places it exists to serve.

We're halfway through the first cohort of Different now, and it's already been a real success. The growth in confidence among participants has been incredible. Some have already stepped into more senior roles. Others are bringing fresh confidence, learning and ideas back into their organisations.

But the real highlight came when one of the participants shared their experience of being part of the programme. They spoke about how it creates space for people who have been made to feel different for so long, giving them a network to rely on, room to grow, and the belief that their difference is a positive. That truth hung in the air. Goosebumps. You had to be there.

At a time when equity and inclusion are being questioned in louder and more public ways, programmes like this are a reminder that they matter, more than ever. Get in touch with us at Tile Hill to find out more.
