Freeing people to think outside the box

In Buckinghamshire, 'we are trying to foster a culture of innovation within the authority, motivating our staff to think differently and find creative solutions to some of our toughest challenges', says Rachael Shimmin.

As we continue to balance the books, work alongside our politicians and deliver for our residents it feels more important than ever that we harness creativity and innovation.

Encouraging and embedding creativity in our organisations can happen organically, by design or both. Given our financial constraints and the length of time we have all been taking money out of council budgets, it feels important to signal our willingness to think about new and creative ways of working. Concentrating solely on negative messaging is no good for feeding anyone's soul.
