Seizing the opportunity of local government reorganisation

Rather than recreating existing structures, councils should use reorganisation to transform services, strengthen local accountability and improve outcomes for communities and places, says Richard Wright.

As councils, we're passionate about serving our communities – we want the best for our taxpayers and service users. Any barriers to this need to be overcome.

It's sometimes felt local government reorganisation (LGR) is one such barrier. More than the 18 months since it became Government policy, LGR has dominated our lives, overshadowing work that has a more immediate impact on our communities. Disruptors like LGR never receive universal support and concerns have been expressed about the complexity of disaggregating services, social care in particular. Some figures who previously supported change recently got cold feet and urged the process be terminated.
