The Local Government Association (LGA) has thrown down the gauntlet to a likely Burnham-led government with warnings the sector faces a £7bn funding black hole.
The analysis claims the gap will rise from £2bn this year, grow to £4.3bn in the following 12 months and reach £7bn in 2028/29 unless the next Prime Minister ‘lays out a new path for local services that is not reliant on council tax rises, short-term fixes and unsustainable emergency bailout arrangements'.
