Dump stamp duty for a mansion tax, says think tank

The government should create a new council tax band for the most expensive homes to fund the abolition of stamp duty, according to the Adam Smith Institute.

The think tank’s report published today says that stamp duty prevents older people from downsizing and ‘gums up the housing market’ – exacerbating the housing crisis. It says that the tax, which raises £12bn each year, also deters people moving to take up new jobs.
