For those who have been campaigning to empower local government for some time, there is a definite sense of anticipation in the air.

George Osborne’s announcement this week that Greater Manchester will be awarded a range of new powers is a welcome move and we hope it marks the beginning of something that will change the landscape of the UK for the better – and for good.

Hedging our bets somewhat, the Labour proposal to create a second chamber to represent cities and regions in Westminster again shows a commitment to rebalance political power.
