Government turned down Woking plea for help

Woking BC’s request for Government financial support two years ago was rejected, allowing the embattled council’s deficit to balloon by a further £1bn, a council meeting has heard.

New details on the financial plight of the struggling borough showed the council’s deficit was £134m when it requested ‘exceptional funding support’ from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) in March 2021.
