‘Raise benefits to aid homeless’

Campaigners are urging ministers to increase housing-related benefits and to support social housebuilding following the publication of several reports and datasets in the run-up to World Homeless Day today.

Research by the National Housing Federation revealed that 94% of homes are unaffordable for local housing allowance (LHA) claimants – with some towns only having one affordable property available. In some areas the LHA covers less than 1% of private rental properties, the analysis suggests.

A spokesperson for the Department for Work and Pensions said the Government had increased more than 360 LHA rates this year.
