Belfast to consider citizens’ assembly on Irish unity

Belfast City Council is to discuss setting up a citizens’ assembly on Irish unity.

The authority’s full council will consider the proposal after Sinn Fein reportedly tabled the motion and received the backing of the SDLP (Social Democratic and Labour Party), Alliance and People Before Profit councillors. Democratic Unionist, Ulster Unionist and Progressive Unionist councillors opposed it.
