Give locals a seat at the table

Many will herald the trailblazer devolution deals unveiled in the chancellor’s spring budget as a victory for levelling up, for local policymaking and for mayors called Andy.

We, at Demos, would be minded to agree – to a point. While the profile raising operation of the West Midlands and Greater Manchester mayors has undoubtedly had a positive impact for their respective regions, we would urge commentators and policymakers alike to look closely at some of the details in the deals before cracking open the champagne.
