Childcare warning after Budget announcement

Wider reform of childcare will be needed if ministers are to deliver a sustainable wraparound system for all families, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced in his Budget last week the Government would provide £4.1bn by 2027-28 to deliver 30 hours a week of free childcare for eligible working parents of children aged 9 months to 3 years in England.

The move – intended to boost growth - will close the gap between parental leave finishing and the current free childcare offering.
